매클로린(1698.2~1746.6.14)영국의 수학자. 스코틀랜드의 킬모든 출생. 15세에 글래스고대학을 졸업, 19세에 애버딘의 매리셜 칼리지 수학 교수가 되었으며, 1725년 에든버러대학 교수가 되었다. 뉴턴의 학통을 이어, 플럭션법을 연구, 미분학에 이바지하고, 이것을 기하학에 응용하였다. 급수전개에 관한 ‘매클로린의 정리’를 발견하여 저서 《유율법(流率法)》(42)을 기술하였으며, 이 책에는 조석(潮汐)의 이론 등도 포함되어 있어 물리학에도 이바지하였다.
